Bettye Rose is the kind of place that people describe as a gem, and in this case the word is earned. The bakery is in downtown Kingston, a few blocks from the lake, and it has become the kind of institution that regulars work into their weekly routine and travelers who stop once tell other people to stop there too.

The pastries are what put the place on the map. Cookies are made to be remembered: the pecan cookie, the gingerbread cookie, the chocolate chip, the snickerdoodle, the almond tea cookie. The apple and cherry turnovers use house-made pastry and are the specific reason many visitors return. Croissants are available. Cannoli are made fresh and are exceptional. Espresso and specialty coffee drinks are available.

The staff is the other consistent bright spot. The service here is genuinely warm: going out of their way to be hospitable to strangers, including sitting down and chatting with out-of-towners who mention they are passing through. The place runs at a deliberate pace. If you are in a hurry, manage expectations; if you have twenty minutes to sit with coffee and a turnover, this is exactly right.
