Roane County Park

Lakeside

The biggest free family park on the lake's north side, with a swim beach, splash pad, kayak launch, and a 1.2-mile trail in the same place.

Roane County Park is the most-loaded family park on the lake's north side, and it does not pack the way you'd expect from a free park in a small county. The shoreline is the centerpiece. The swim area is roped off with pipe buoys, deep enough for actual swimming, and sits next to a chlorinated splash pad that gives kids a clean rinse-and-cool transition off the lake. There's a kayak launch a short walk from the swim beach. Fishing piers project out into the water at multiple spots. The 1.2-mile paved walking trail loops along the shoreline, with benches and a flower garden tended by a local Master Gardener club along the way.

The infrastructure is more than the lake-side activities. Three playgrounds at different scales (one stocked with sand toys), an 18-hole disc golf course in the woods, tennis courts, picnic pavilions, and clean restrooms with changing areas. There is no on-site boat ramp, but the Caney Creek ramp is close. There are no showers. The park is well-maintained and the staff is consistent; the cleanliness shows even on busy weekends.

The geese can be opportunistic, particularly along the swim beach. Goose droppings on the lawn are a real if seasonal annoyance. Camping is available in a small area, separately. Cell service is good. For a free family day on the water without committing to a marina or buying a boat ticket, this is the lake-wide best answer on the Harriman side, and it's a real one.

Weekday mornings are quietest. Sunday afternoons fill the swim beach but the park is large enough to absorb the crowd; the back of the loop near the disc golf course always has space.
