Watts Bar Lock

A functional navigation lock at the dam with bridges and industrial structure for the people who like that, and a solid fishing spot for everyone else.

Watts Bar Lock sits at the dam complex near Decatur and provides the navigation channel through Watts Bar Dam for commercial and recreational traffic. The Corps of Engineers operates it; the phone number is (423) 334-3522. Free lockage for recreational boaters, same as the other Tennessee River locks.

The structure is a niche stop, worth the detour if industrial infrastructure and big bridges are your kind of thing. It is not a family destination in the conventional sense. What it is, reliably, is a fishing spot. The area around the lock on the Piney Point side has produced crappie from the bank and boat ramp adjacent to the structure. Striper concentrate in the current below. The elevation differential at this location is notable: approximately 52 feet above the downstream pool. Large sturgeon have been observed in the vicinity, which is not a claim you hear at most Tennessee lake structures.

Fishing access from the boat ramp makes this one of the more productive public bank and ramp spots in the lower lake dam area. Boaters transiting from the Tennessee River up into Watts Bar Lake use this lock exclusively; there is no alternate passage.
