Short answer: Drop a worm under a bobber next to a dock post for bluegill. Drop a jig and minnow for crappie. Drop a bottom rig with cut bait for catfish. Tom Fuller Park (Rockwood) and TVA's Watts Bar Dam Reservation are the standard public docks.
Drop a worm under a bobber 3 ft down next to a dock piling for bluegill.
Drop a jig + minnow in 8 to 14 ft between pilings for crappie.
Drop cut bait on a bottom rig for catfish.
Pliers + a long-handled landing net are mandatory. So is a TWRA license for anyone 13+.
What lives under a Watts Bar dock
Bluegill roost in the shade under the dock edge and along pilings. The most consistent dock catch. Worm or cricket under a bobber, three feet down.
Crappie hold on the pilings, especially deeper ones. Vertical jig with a minnow, dropped between pilings in 8 to 14 ft. Best March-May, again in October.
Channel catfish sit on the bottom near pilings, where dropped food and dead baitfish accumulate. Cut shad, chicken liver, or hot dog on a bottom rig.
Largemouth bass use docks for shade in summer. Catchable with a soft plastic skipped under the dock, but easier from a boat that can fish the back side.
Where you can legally fish from a dock
Public fishing docks (free, no permit):
Tom Fuller Memorial Park, Rockwood. Three floating docks plus the longest public fishing pier on the lake. Restrooms, paved greenway, free parking.
Marina docks: most Watts Bar marinas allow fishing from courtesy docks if you ask the office and spend some money there (fuel, snacks, bait). Don't fish around fuel customers; don't leave trash.
Private residential docks: off-limits without the owner's permission. TVA shoreline leases specify private use.
Best time of day
Dawn and dusk produce best across all species. Bluegill bite all day. Crappie hit hardest at sunrise, sunset, and full dark under dock lights. Catfish bite best from sunset through midnight. Midday summer (10 AM-4 PM) is the slowest window; pick the deepest, most shaded dock you can find.
What to bring to a dock
6 or 7 foot light or medium-light spinning combo (about $35).
Small tackle box: 1/16 and 1/8 oz jig heads, small soft plastics in chartreuse and white (Bobby Garland Baby Shads work well in stained water), #6 long-shank Aberdeen hooks, split shot, bobbers, egg sinkers.
Can I fish from a marina dock without renting a slip?
Usually yes if you ask the marina office and spend some money there (fuel, snacks, bait). Most Watts Bar marinas are friendly to short-term courtesy-dock fishing. Don't fish around fuel customers and don't leave trash.
Can I fish from a private dock on Watts Bar?
Only with the dock owner's express permission. Private residential docks on Watts Bar are governed by TVA shoreline leases that specify private use. Don't fish from one that isn't yours.
What's the best public fishing dock on Watts Bar?
Tom Fuller Memorial Park in Rockwood. Three floating docks, a dedicated fishing pier (the longest public fishing structure on the lake), restrooms, and free parking. Open daylight hours.
